Here you will find details for the 2019 Advanced Paediatric Pathology Course.
Ivo Leuschner Memorial Advanced Course in Paediatric Pathology
Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean and has a long history of being the crossroads between Africa and Europe, East and West. Nearly a thousand years ago, Palermo was one of the largest cities in Europe, a multicultural centre, had four official languages, the capital of a state covering Sicily and Southern Italy, ruled by a Scandinavian family, a long history of Greek and Byzantine and 250 years of Arabic rule, with Phoenician, Berber, Lombard and Jewish influences. Greek, Arabic and Byzantine influences are evident in many historical sites.
Ivo Leuschner Memorial Advanced Course in Paediatric Pathology

Professor Ivo Leuschner died on 29 January 2017 in Kiel. He is survived by his wife Sabine, and their three children Johannes, Katharina and Alexander. Ivo was born on 14 June 1959 in Erlanger, Germany. He completed his medical degree at University of Kiel, and after a year of internship in St. Gallen (Switzerland) and London (UK), he returned to Kiel to do his medical thesis in microbiology (1986) before he started training in pathology at the Institute of Pathology, University of Kiel. He was very fortunate to have great teachers including Prof. K. Lennart, Prof. D. Harms, Prof. M. Dietel and Prof. D. Schmidt. He passed a medical board exam in pathology in 1994, and then continued his training in paediatric pathology in Kiel and through the attendance of the IPPA Advanced Courses in Paediatric Pathology (1995 – 1999). He obtained a PhD degree in 2002. In 2007 he was promoted to Professor of Paediatric Pathology at the Medical School of the Christian-Albrechts-University in Kiel, and Head of the Department of Paediatric Pathology at the University Hospital of Schleswig-Holstein in Kiel. The main focus of Ivo’s work was paediatric tumours – having the privilege of training and working in the birth place of the world renowned Kiel Pediatric Tumor Registry, which was founded by Prof. D. Harms in 1974, Ivo became its Chairman and significantly developed it by introducing modern molecular biology techniques. He was a very deeply committed pathologist who worked tirelessly on improving diagnosis and outcome of children with tumours, and was involved in all German paediatric tumours studies, as well as in many international trials and studies, including soft tissue sarcoma, paediatric liver tumours, renal tumours, neuroblastoma, germ cell tumours, malignant endocrine tumours, and LCH. He was a member of the Pathology Panel of the SIOPEL Liver Tumour Study, and co-chair of the Pathology Panel of the SIOP Renal Tumour Study Group. He was involved in the pathology protocol for the new UMBRELLA Renal Tumour Study which has just been launched and in which Ivo was supposed to be one of the key contributors in providing rapid central pathology review not only for Germany, but for many other countries as well. He was a great teacher and lecturer and many pathologists around the world benefited either from their visits and stays in Kiel, or from attending his lectures at many national and international meetings, congresses, seminars and courses. He was an author or co-author of over 250 papers and always made a significant contribution to them by providing immaculate pathological data or meticulously and diligently writing his parts. He was a quiet person who would never lose his temper even during the most heated debates, always presenting his arguments in a calm and composed way, fully acknowledging other people’s views, but not being afraid of disagreeing on something. He had a wry sense of humour and was well known for his mischievous grin, had a very kind heart and was always prepared to listen to other people and help them as much as he possibly could. Over the last 5 years Ivo, with his close friend and colleague Bengt Sandstedt (Sweden), went many times to Vietnam teaching and lecturing, to help that country’s pathologists to improve their diagnostic skills and accuracy and, consequently, treatment and outcome of children with cancer. He was a hugely appreciated person and professional and will be immensely missed by many friends and colleagues around the world.
